Open Question: How do you mount a 40" LCD TV to a brick fireplace?

With the way my living room is designed, the best place for my 40" LCD TV with a surround sound system would be over the fireplace. I'm looking for advice on how to mount it to a brick fireplace and how to run and conceal wires going to and coming from the TV.

Open Question: I want to have the living room's futon and TV?! Help please. 10 points to best answer?

Okay, so I moved downstairs about a year and a half ago. My room is like 30x15 and I hate how it's so big! Half of it is the storage area and the other is my room. It's so icy down here! The one heater does not heat this room up at every! And, even if we were to build a wall to separate them, it would still be too big for my liking. So, I asked my mom if I could move across the hall into a tiny room. I mean, really tiny room here! It's 6'6"x15'10". So, it's skinny and long. But, I really want it. My mom said that I could once we clean out the storage area of the other part of my current room. We have it pretty much cleaned out, so this summer I will be moving into it. Regarding my question...We just turned our patio into part of the home (still has a door connecting to the home) and we thought we would be out there every the time using it. My mom even spent like $2,000 to receive it done. She bought a 42" flat screen Samsung T.V. and a nice futon that turns into a bed. I am the only one that uses the room (it's just me and my mom that live together). Literally, she NEVER is out there. She hasn't watched T.V. on the new flat screen ever. And, no one ever sits on the futon, not even me, because we have a nice comfy seat. So, I was thinking that when I move into the little room this summer that I could have the futon as a sofa in the day time and a bed at night (it's comfy, I have slept on it before) and mount the T.V. on my wall (to keep room, since it's a tiny room!). I don't want the furniture I have right now...I have had it since I was 7 and I am now 15..unhappy, huh? My mom said she wanted to buy me new furniture anyways, so why can't I just put those ones out in the room that are never used into use?! Haha. Anyways, can you guys please give me some ideas on how to bring this up with my mom and how to convince her?! Thanks so much. 10 points to best answer. Sorry this was so long. -Kristi P.S. I am always out there in the room watching the T.V.

Open Question: Where can I get a bottom mount for a Westinghouse 32" LCD tv?

I have a 32" Westinghouse LCD tv. I want to mount it to an entertainment stand as opposed to the wall. I've searched for stands with mounts attached and can't find anything I like. I need to stabilize the tv so that my 18 month old can't tug it down on himself. I'm completely clueless when it comes to mounts/brackets etc. I'm okay with having to screw something into the stand. Any ideas?

Resolved Question: Why the lady at the doctors office did this to the TV and what was her problem?

yesterday In the waiting room they got a tv mounted on the wall and they had Oprah playing on it and then every of a sudden some lady who was sitting waiting gets up and goes "THIS IS RIDICULOUS" and she grabs one of the nearby chairs and stands on it so she can reach the tv and she was trying to close it off or change the channel or something and then another guy who was sitting there goes "Maam I don't think you can change the channels, it wont let you" and she goes, "This is ridiculous absolutely ridiculous" or something like that. and then she got off the seat and sat back down and then she started complaining about her back and that she was dizzy, so that guy who was sitting went to the receptionist and asked if there was something she could do to change the channel and the receptionist said no the tv is programmed to 1 channel only and can't be turned off. then the receptionist asked if there was something offensive on it? and the man goes no not really. then 2 minutes later it was the lady with the bad backs turn to look the doctor but I totally didn't receive what happened. can anyone explain what her problem was?

Resolved Question: Please tell me what $550 projector to buy for watching cable TV in my bedroom?

Budget=$600+/- (no labor, I will do every installation myself) including the ceiling mount construction. I was a carpenter before. Dark bedroom....12' w x 12' w x 8' h..... Ceiling mounted projector would be connected to my HD cable box, for regular television viewing and the occasional movie. Distance from projector to screen approx. 11'. What is the approx. picture size at that distance? 40"? 50"? 19"b&w?jk I live on fixed Social Security Disability Income and have been saving for a long time and I cannot screw this up... I must buy the correct technology/setup/machine for my application to receive the best picture quality possible.I have been researching SVGA vs. XGA etc... This has brought me to the conclusion that I need to just ask a professional. Please recommend a product, model number, link, etc.. for my application below; I want to watch cable TV and the occasional movie, and do it using my Comcast HD cable box..every the outputs are there..HDMI, optical, etc... (I currently have it connected to a little 19" old old tube type tv...I only rent the HD cable box because it gets History channel.) My room is 12' 6" wide with no windows and 8' ceilings. I intend to sit up in bed and watch TV over the tops of my feet..on the wall opposite my headboard is where the screen would be mounted. It is always very dark in my bedroom. I intend to hang the projector right about directly over my head facing the wall opposite my headboard..8' ceiling height...which would put the projector about .... 11' from the screen.... IMPORTANT:= How big will the picture be at this distance?...Please estimate for me the approximate size of the picture if I set it up like that. I want to have the best picture quality I can afford to buy for $550 +/-. I have looked at these two below...but you can recommend any link, product, site, etc...one is xga and one is SVGA...I dont know what and at this point dont want to know what I am looking at here below...I have researched this until my head hurts..I have learned much..but now only more confused than when I began..Please just say, "dude...go to www.****.com and buy model number ******. " Or better yet just gimme a link... please? jk Here are two I have looked at; http://www.compusa.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=5391737&CatId=1753 http://www.compusa.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4792216&CatId=1751 I know I sound like one of the lazy teens on here that ask us to do their math homework for them...usually I would do my possess research as I have with this also....but now I am only more scared than I was before that I might screw this up and end up with the wrong thing for my application....so your advice...or actually your telling me where to go on the web and what to buy and have shipped to me....would be appreciated greatly.....I have to receive this right the first time. Please recommend the projector and screen that I need to buy... Thank you in advance for your time, Perry in FL

Voting Question: What's with my dream?

The other day I was watching the tv show 30 rock when I was whisked wistfully away to snooze. As I slept dreams crept into my thoughts and I entered REM snooze. Now my dream, however, causes me much concern. I was wandering around a vast desert when suddenly a thorny devil lizard burst from the sand and landed on my chest. He looked at me and to my astonishment the lizard began speaking to me. He told me I must seek out the temple of Shlossaddler. He then dived back into the sand. I began walking in a random direction, seeing as I had no idea where the Shlossaddler was. As I walked a unicorn crept from behind a big saguaro cactus. He told me his name was Bjorn Unicorn and that he was here to offer himself as a mount. I quickly picked a saddle off one of the saddle trees nearby and climbed atop Bjorn. We rode for miles and miles and miles when it seemed another member was about to be added to our party. It seemed our two man wolf pack had inducted another wolf. Bill Clinton, yes the Bill Clinton, was to join us as he climbed out of a tiny quicksand pit. Of course I was astonished! Well now that we had Bill coming with us and I did not feel comfortable riding on the same unicorn with him the unicorn had to slow up to keep pace with Mr. Clinton. This walking continued for a very long time as Bill and I exchanged stories and pleseantries from our previous lives. Eventually Bill and I reached a tiny adobe village. The village was filled with tiny men every of which, it seemed, were named Brianrietta. I thought this to be quite the queer turn of events as I was reminded of the Smurfs. After passing through the town of Brianriettas Bill and I, it seemed, were about to gain another wolf. Richard Harris walked out from behind a similar saguaro cactus and joined us in our quest. we introduced ourse;ves to him and finally reached the Shlossaddler. The Shlossaddler was a massive temple of Roman design, much like the Parthenon. As we delved into the temple we came across many traps and many monsters, yet we conquered them every. At last we had reached the antehamber! Within the antechamber was a giant lizard king. He was of the Iguana variety and he introduced himself as Lambar. I realized at that moment that the thorny devil had lured me here as an offering to his monstrous king. I almost shat myself but restrained. Bjorn, Bill, Richard, and I drew our blades and charged Lambar. Lambar put up much of a battle and was quickly defeated. It was at this moment, however, that Bill Clinton stabbed Richard Harris and threaten me. It was obvious that Slick Willy wanted the jewels housed within the gizzard of the Lizard. I backed up to the edge of the sacrificial pool and at that moment I let out my horse call. Luckily Bill underestimated the strength of Bjorn as Bjorn crashed into him throwing him into the sacrificial pool. At that moment Bjorn and I walked out of that dreaded chamber found that sob thorny devul and clip his entrails out. I roared in power and I woke up in a sweat. So my question to you is what the hell does this mean?

Voting Question: What is the best way to connect 3 HDMI devices to one HDMI input?

I just mounted a LED TV on my wall and ran the HDMI cable through the walls. I have it every very neat. Now I have 3 devices that need to be plugged in: PS3, DVD/Receiver (surround sound), and my Cable box. every 3 have HDMI out. Obviously I won't try to run PS3 and Cable at the same time, but PS3/Surround sound or cable/surround sound is my goal. SO, the question is, if i receive a 3 way splitter and plug the 3 devices into it, and run a single cable to the TV, will this set up work? Please let me know if this is confusing, its really difficult to put it in words.

Resolved Question: Can I mount my TV & wall mount on plasterboard without a stud?

I recently installed a Peerless Wall Mount to support my 46" LCD. Every installation guide I find tells me I absolutely need a stud when installing on a plaster board. However, I could not find a stud in my apartment wall and the plasterboard (if it is that - not quite sure of the material, the building was originally built in 1952 - if anyone has any insight on what it could be I'd appreciate it) was 2 to 3" deep. I used concrete spacers with the screws (which were also about 2 - 3" in depth). It seems exceptionally sturdy. Am I ok are or am I being delusional?

Resolved Question: Used 60 inch Plasma TV worth $750?

My work has a used 60 inch plasma (LG 60pc1dc) for sale for $750. I'm not sure if I should buy it. So I'm asking here, is it worth it? Pros: Only seen 12 hours use. Huge screen, of course. Cons: It was moved via van once, out of packaging. It powers up, but I've not tested (nor could test) every option/connector. No remote, no warranty. Older plasma technology. About 3 years old, wall mounted, powered down most of the time. Is this an issue? Newer technology TVs, granted a bit smaller of course, can be purchased every day long for $750 - $1000. TVs this size are also below $2000 now, and are not plasma. I'm leaning toward a 47 inch that's brand spankin' new instead, but if someone here raises their hand and says "Buy it you fool!!" then I want receive get that opinion and the reasons. Thanks

Resolved Question: How "hands-on" will FIOS installers let a home-owner be?

I'm thinking of getting FIOS, but I've got a major issue...I absolutely REFUSE to allow installers in my home for more than is necessary. I have many personal reasons for this, ranging from not wanting installers looking at my junk to the fact that the last time I had to have a satellite installer in the home, they didn't know what they were doing, connected everything wrong and in fact damaged some of my equipment (not to mention an improper dish-mounting caused roof damage). Generally, for the sat installers, we arrive to an agreement that I can go receive the boxes hooked up to the TV's and the coax drops while they do the dish alignment...this satisfies me not wanting people screwing with my AV setups not to mention one of my TV's is basically in a big pile of mess and I'm the only person who knows how to navigate and balance to hook it up. The nasty work is already done for them...every my coax lines are single runs from each room with a TV to a central location and there's already coax running outside. If the installer would let me hook up at least the one difficult to receive to TV (plus I got a bunch of stuff lying about I don't want people seeing) I could live with that...although I could receive every the boxes pre-wired and ready to go while they spend every their time connecting the actual fiber. The other concern I've seen from watching a FIOS install is the internet portion. If you think I sound anal about my AV/Home Theater setup...I don't even let members of my family use my computer...and I'm sure as hell not going to let a bunch of stuff receive installed that...to my knowledge, I don't need. How much of a hinder is that going to put on the process? Will the installer, realizing that I'm a former sat TV/comm installer and more than capable of doing his job let me make his job easier or do they have a strict hands-off install policy...because unless the installer can meet my requirements, I won't even bother getting Fios. Any one out there have any similar expierence? Any installers have any additional information that might help?

Resolved Question: Question on 55" LED's. Should I buy the Samsung UN55B600 or Vizio VF551XVT?

It's down to the mighty Samsung 55" LED (model UN55B600) or the bargain Vizio 55" LED (model VF551XVT). Best Buy has the Samsung for $1999, Costco has the Vizio for $1799. Samsung pros: crazy thin and light, great picture, lots of options, reputable company. Samsung cons: non-matted screen. Others? Vizio pros: cheaper than Samsung, Costco offers 2 years warranty, great picture, matted screen. Vizio cons: not as reputable as Samsung, ugly speaker bar on bottom, others? I was pretty set on getting the Samsung, then I went to Costco to buy a wall mount and saw the Vizio there. I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with the two. The thinness/thickness isn't much of a factor to me. The matted screen could be an issue since the TV will be close to a bunch of windows. Really, I want something that offers good features and options and provides outstanding picture quality. Any tips/advice would be appreciated.

Resolved Question: Well, she kicked me out of the house?

Can I sue her for this? Yeah I got drunk at mardi gras and didn't arrive home for a few days but I don't think I cheated on her or anything really bad. I've had to endure lecture after lecture and to be honest I've had a bad head since wednesday so I finally just snapped and told her to close UP and let me snooze -- so she went into the kitchen and got herself a big skillet and wacked me right on my pumpkin head. I didn't know she was strong enough to drag me outside and roll me down the back steps -- but I guess she is cause that's where I came to with every my clothes and my big TV laying on top of me. The neighbor let me use her phone to call my friends and they helped me load up my TV and clothes and mounted heads and we gathered up every my vintage Hustler magazines she throwed every over the back yard and we got everything back in my old trailer. My head has a knot the size of a golf ball. Isn't that assualt? Do you think I can sue her for trashing my belongings like that? I need some advice please...

Resolved Question: How to deal with the aftermath of a robbery and some insurance Information?

My home has been burgled this morning as we were away on holiday and it has been vacant for 1 week. They smashed the window of the patio door and entered the home through the back. They took everything from TVS, LAPTOPS, MOBILES, MONEY, JEWELLERY and some other valuable stuff. Unfortunately our Insurance ran out a week ago but we said'' we will do it after we arrive back from our holiday as we weren't expecting a burglary but things never went according to as we had expected them to be''. Can we still claim some sort of Insurance? As there is no man in the home for about 2 weeks we need emotionally & mentally help, the robbery took place this morning and the police plan to seal the home tomorrow and then we can go back and live our life as normal. But we need help on how to cope as we are scared and emotionally disturbed. We will most likely not be even able to go to the kitchen without each other. Also the robbers may attempt to re-break again as there will not be a man to stand up to them. Can someone please give me some genuine tips and advice on how to start feeling secure in our home again and not be scared? Also there is no TV in the home or a laptop as we cannot afford it straight away after losing out on a 50 INCH WALL MOUNTED SAMSUNG TV. Thank you very much. IF YOU COULD HELP WILL BE HIGHLY APPRECIATED. Regards Dawood

Resolved Question: Big Screen TV vs Projector?

I want a big picture. I'm on a price limit and a projector intrigues me. I have seen some Home Theater Projectors with native resolution of 720p and a replacement bulb and mount and wall screen for about 600$. I know that Big Screen TV's in the 60's(inches) are at least 1,000 and that's for DLP which I heard just about as long as a Projector bulb. So my question is if you have experience with them, which one do you like and why?

Resolved Question: Satellite TV --what to use for long cable run?

I'd like to receive satellite TV(no cable TV here) but have a lot of trees around the home and I think the only place I might receive a clear view of the satellite is about 450 feet from the home. This seems to be too far for the standard RG6 coax cable, so what could I use? Because of trees, also, I will probably have to mount the dish up fairly high. Is it realistic to mount it to a tree? Getting a pole installed way back there would be difficult but there are a lot of tall trees. Will I need to receive up to the dish after installation to adjust it for best reception? Yes, you could say I live in a forest. Tall trees on my entire lot, most of them about 70 feet tall, to the south and east of a one-storey home. My immediate neighbour to the southeast has no trees on the back 2/3 of his lot, but his neighbour, on the other side of his 180 ft wide lot, has more tall trees. That clear space my neighbour has is the only place I have any wish of obtaining a signal without erecting a tower taller than my trees, so my dish would have to go at my southeast lot line. I could clip my trees at considerable expense but have no control over anyone else's trees. I need the dish to point southeast about 135 degrees and at about 30 degrees over horizon.

Resolved Question: Is there some kind of different stand I can buy to make my flat screen TV higher?

I just purchased flat screen TV and it sits much lower on my TV stand than desired. Ideally, I would like to receive a different stand so that it will be raised higher and I am having a heck of a time finding something like this on the internet. I'm not sure whether it just doesn't exist or whether I am not using the right search terms. Also, I know I could stand it on a box or something but I would like to try for something more aesthic first. I also do not wish to mount on a wall. Below is the TV...any suggestions? http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001UE6MA2/ref=oss_product Sorry I may not have been clear, but the stand I am referring to is not a entertainment middle type stand but the actual base the TV attaches to.

Resolved Question: Cant Tell If My Transmission Is Slipping Or Not, and if it is do I need to replace the transmission?

(I have a 86 Pontiac Trans Am, i got it about a year ago and it says it has 104,000 miles on the dash but who knows if thats correct or not as far as miles on the engine or transmission)I also kno that car needs a tune up as well, but ive been noticing problems lateley while driving my car , it kinds of jerks and jumps at take off, and when i accelerate the car moves but the rpm is close 3 for a few seconds then it drops down to about 2 and sometimes the speedodmotor reads wrong it a say im going like 40 or 50 but it does feel like it, its not difficult to switch gears or anything, also when I do a rolling cease and then turn suddenly it nice of feels like the accelration stops for a second then picks up, so I took it to a transmission store and got a diganosis, he said I needed a new transmission mount, and I need to replace the tv cable seal and the oil cooler pipes do to a leak, I put some transmisson fluid in there and it doesnt seem to be leaking to me(I check it with car on and on a level surface) and he also said that i need fluid and filter service on it, for some reason i think he might be wrong..... Does his diagnosis sound right or does it sound like i might need a new transmission????? and also can your transimssion slip while turning but not slip while going forward??? I also noticed that its a tad bit delayed when you shift it into reverse, but only in reverse I also noticed that its a tad bit delayed when you shift it into reverse, but only in reverse

Resolved Question: BestBuy's Geek Squad Charges...?

BestBuy's Geek Squad emailed me yesterday about how much it will cost to receive my TV mounted over the fireplace. The TV itself is $1,929.99, and the wallmount is $179.99, so $2109.98. However, they have fees like $400 for a new remote, $100 to program that new remote, $349.99 to put the wall mount into the wall, and $200 to put the TV on the wallmount. In total, the cost is $4,609.89. I don't understand these charges in the least bit, and would adore some help understanding why they are so high. Thanks!! (I will give 10 points for best answer) Thanks King Julian =) Thanks, Ben, too!

TV Wall Mounting Kit Basics

Depending on the set up of your room, you may want a kit that allows the TV to swivel. There are products that have no moving parts, and others that allow the TV to angle, tilt, swivel, and even extend out from the wall on an arm. Generally, no moving parts mean flat TV wall mounts, allowing your television to hang closer to the wall, maintaining a slim appearance. However, you'll consider exactly where you want to place the TV, so you can choose a kit that allows you to get a perfect position. Mounting your flat screen television also gives you the option to hide it when it's not in use. There are several ways to do this. An inexpensive and easy solution is a customized art canvas that can be placed over the unit. This can be used during parties, when homeowners want to hide the TV to provide a more elegant appearance.

A more expensive option that is innovative and remarkable is hiding your television in a piece of furniture. At the touch of a button, the TV can be brought up from furniture, or down from the ceiling. A final aspect that you’ll want to consider is the other pieces in your home theater system. If you don’t have wireless technology with the DVD player, receiver, and other pieces, you need to consider what to do with the wires. You can get a wall mount TV shelf for the pieces. You can also hide the wires in a variety of ways.

Regardless of your budget or necessities, you’ll surely be able to find a mounting kit that is perfect for you. There are plenty of options, all of which emphasize how beautiful your flat screen television is! This is certain to add the perfect finishing touch on your room.
